If you spend any time watching TV, it would be easy to believe that everyone lives in a sparkling home. But the truth is, life is messy and so are we.
Believe it or not, that’s okay!
Still, many people dread house-cleaning, because while they may love relaxing in a clean house, they dread putting in the time and effort for such a massive undertaking.
It’s possible though, that achieving that satisfying state of deeply clean doesn’t take as long as people think it does. No, you won’t be able to have your whole home magazine-perfect in under an hour, but with a few handy tools you can definitely clean your house much quicker and more efficiently.
How To Clean Faster
The most important thing to look at are the tools of the trade.
If you’re sweeping the floor with an old broom that sheds bristles as quickly as it picks up dirt, or embarking on epic climbing adventures to reach high places, you may be slowing yourself down unnecessarily without even realizing it.
Upgrading your cleaning supplies is a fast and simple way to improve your cleaning speed.
Clean Floors Quicker
One of our absolute go-to products for quicker cleaning is a large dry mop like this Red Sweeper Mop Kit.
The sheer size of this alone will help with efficiency: the 80cm mop head covers a lot of ground very quickly and adeptly.
The swivelled head allows you to clean dust, pet hair, and other debris out of corners. It also goes flat so you can sweep easily under beds, shelves, dressers, or other furniture.
The sweeper’s lightweight handle and frame is easy to manoeuvrer. Plus, the mop head comes off easily and can be cleaned in the washing machine, making this tool as convenient as it is efficient.
Clean Glass & Windows Quicker
The rest of your house can be immaculate but if your windows aren’t clean it doesn’t put your house in the best light, quite literally speaking. But allow us to shed some light on a tool that will expedite the lengthy window-washing process.
It’s called a Heavy Duty Floor Scrubber Squeegee, but don’t let the name fool you: you can use it to dry windows, shower glass, mirrors, concrete, tile floors, and more.
Best of all, it comes with a four part handle that can be configured in several different ways, allowing you to extend your reach in a way that’s ergonomically-friendly.
How To Hoover Faster
When you think about Hoovers, you probably think of bulky, old-fashioned upright machines wheezing along, cord tangling around furniture. If so, it’s time to step into the 21st century.
Handheld vacuums are the wave of the future: they’re lightweight, come in and out of storage easily, and manoeuvrer around effortlessly. Dyson handheld Hoovers are the pinnacle when it comes to keeping carpets and upholstery clean in a low-impact and efficient way – our favourite is the Dyson V7 Motorhead Pro.
If you’re thinking about how to clean your house quicker and more efficiently then a handheld Hoover is the number one tool – they’re expensive but TOTALLY worth it.
HINT: good less expensive options other than Dyson are available.
You’ll be simply amazed how much time these bad boys can save you, especially when you’re hoovering stairs.
How To Dust More Efficiently
Top tip: use wipes to clean and dust at same time where possible.
It’s incredibly easy to get bogged down in dusting your furniture.
First you need some kind of dust-repellent surface cleaner. Then you need the perfect cloth to clean the dust – one that doesn’t leave any fuzz behind of its own.
Then you may get distracted by an old spill on a table and go off to find a wet cloth to clean it with.
Before you know it, you’ve spent the day wiping at things, but nothing feels quite clean.
Dusting is the part of your cleaning routine where you can really save the most time by switching to Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleaning Wipes.
This is a one-and-done situation: simply swipe the pre-moistened wipe over just about any surface and your dusting and cleaning are done in one fell swoop. As a bonus, they kill all kinds of germs, but because they’re bleach free they don’t leave an unpleasant odor behind. This is a one-stop cleaning efficiency solution.
Reach High Places Quickly
Unless you’re an adrenaline junkie, you probably don’t enjoy climbing into precarious positions to dust high corners and shelves and light fixtures.
Good news: you can save yourself from injury in an embarrassing household fall by using a WinHux Extra Long Extendable Duster to get into those hard-to-reach places.
- Its telescopic handle bends and stretches to reach spots 3.4 meters away.
- Its lightweight to use, but still sturdy.
- Its head is detachable for easy washing.
You can save yourself a ton of time cleaning using this handy household tool, and get at those annoying out of reach places with ease.
How To Clean More Efficiently
Cleaning quicker isn’t just all about how to clean your house faster it’s about how to do it as efficiently as possible – it’s here you can save yourself a bunch of time.
Now that you have all the right tools in place, you need to put a system in place to deploy them most effectively. The trick is to make a game plan and stick with it and to minimize your movements in order to maximize your efficiency.
What To Clean First: Strip & De-Clutter
Many people start the cleaning process by planning to tackle one room at a time. The problem with that, is you start by picking stuff up and taking it where it belongs only to get sidetracked by something in the new room. It’s best to work by task instead of by room: that allows you to flow from one task to the next more naturally without so many false starts and stops.
First, we recommend going from room to room and stripping down all bedding and gathering up towels and stray articles of clothes that need to be washed, and throwing them in the washing machine. Laundry always takes the most time of your cleaning tasks, so it’s great to get that started early so you can tackle other tasks while it’s underway.
Next, go around and remove everything from surface areas that doesn’t need to be there. Any toiletries on your bathroom counters can go in bathroom drawers: any dishes or kitchen appliances can go into cabinets. Just the act of clearing away unnecessary clutter makes you feel less stressed and pressured which can make the act of cleaning feel less like a chore. This will also make it much work when it comes time to cleaning your surfaces.
Work Efficiently Top To Bottom: Dusting & Wiping Down
Often, middle and top shelves may be less visibly dusty than bottom shelves, just because they tend to be used more and so dust the dust gets disturbed and blanket the area so thickly. It’s tempting to go right towards the dustier bottom shelf. But the problem with that is, once it’s clean, the top shelves now seem more in need of dusting. So you tackle them next, and now they’re clean which is great! Only, the bottom shelves are dusty again, because the dust from the top levels has just fallen lower. So now you’ve added extra steps you didn’t need.
It’s also tempting to do each piece of furniture separately, but then you’re going to spend a lot of time and energy getting down and up again. If you start at one side of the room and work your way around wiping down high areas – crown moldings, top shelves, high window frames – then go back around do the areas closer to waist height, and then do one more pass around the room for the lower areas. If you have a rolling stool or office chair this comes in handy for those lower areas so you don’t have to get up and down a lot.
What To Clean Last: Floors & Carpets
As discussed earlier, it’s best to dust and wipe down surfaces from top to bottom, as dust and other detritus will fall down to lower shelves. The same principles apply here. Additionally, as you move from room to room, you may inadvertently track things along with you. Saving floors and carpets for last will negate the need for you to have to backtrack and vacuum or mop the same spot more than once. When at the end you’re ready for the final floor clean, start in the farthest back areas of your home and work your way back to the front so you don’t end up trapped while you wait for floors to dry!
